SUPER DARIUS (NEC AVENUE / TAITO)
SUPER CD-ROM 2 (JAPANESE VERSION)

|
Darius is one of the most sucessful Taito´s series of all-time. Originally released on Japanese arcades, back in the 80´s, Darius games had an interesting and peculiar feature: they used three video monitors at the same time, arranged side by side, to overdimension the action and the visual of each match. The first time I´ve heard about such huge machines was in a Japanese MSX magazine, which showed some pics of the (at that time) brand new arcade Darius II... to be left
speechless!

The games from Darius series had been released to several consoles, from the PC-ENGINE to Playstation. Darius Plus was the first game of the series released on the PC-ENGINE. It was a hybrid title, which runs on a normal PCE but demands a Super-Grafx to be fully functional. In 1990, NEC Avenue released Super Darius, exactly the very same game as Darius Plus, but with Audio-CD
musics. |

At the first sight, one can easily found out that Super Darius is quite a simple game, with graphics not impressive at all. But, if the graphics aren´t superb, the gameplay is amazing. I´m not a big fan of Darius games, but I enjoyed a lot this CD version: the rhythm is excellent, with smooth scrolling and a well-balanced difficulty (except on final stage). The musics are good, but they sound a little cheesy and outdated.

If you´re looking for a Darius game with outstanding graphics and musics, pick up Super Darius II, which will certainly knock you out. Otherwise, if you´re simply looking for an entertaining shooter, Super Darius is recommended. |
